Where these flights actually go
Most of the traffic on this route runs through Dubai to Tehran — Imam Khomeini for international arrivals, Mehrabad for domestic connections — with Mashhad and Shiraz behind it, and Sharjah and Abu Dhabi as alternative departures worth checking when Dubai is expensive. If your dates are fixed, compare all three departure airports before you settle. The saving is sometimes large enough to pay for the taxi several times over.
What to decide before anything else
The first thing to decide is not the airline, it is how firm your return date is. A cheap one-way plus a later return bought separately looks attractive on a search page and is usually the expensive option in practice, because the flexibility you will want later has to be bought at the price of the day rather than the price you booked at. If there is any chance the trip extends, ask what a changeable fare costs before you rule it out. The difference is often smaller than the change fee it avoids.
The second is documentation, and here we will not put a rule in writing. Entry requirements for Iran depend on your nationality, on where you are resident, and on conditions that have moved more than once in recent years. Airport assistance, onward domestic connections inside Iran, and group travel for families moving together are the things this desk actually spends its time on, and they are the things a booking form handles worst. If you are travelling with children, with elderly parents, or as a party of more than four or five, it is worth twenty minutes on the phone before anything is issued.
